'Tis A Season

'Tis A Season

Image Borrowed from: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_W0QgueArHJ4/TBBLYfHkkqI/AAAAAAAAAGs/9dARvrlSVGI/s1600/life+seasons.jpg

For those of you that don't know, this has been a year full of change for me. Back in August, we discovered that my husband Will has cancer and he has been on chemotherapy since the beginning of September. And as much as I'd like to say that I've held it all together, the fact of the matter is that it has been extremely difficult. The reason that I made the title of this article "'Tis A Season" instead of "'Tis The Season" is because I wanted to remind everyone going through hard times that we all go through different seasons in life. The rain will go away eventually and the clouds will subside. You will see the sun shine again.

My husband and I like to make lists of goals for the year. Earlier this year, we had a very long list, with plans and expectations of what would happen. Well, we never would have thought in a million years that something like this would happen to Will. He is young and healthy, in shape and active. But, cancer doesn't play favorites and sometimes life surprises us. The comfort that we find, however, is that God will never leave us, nor forsake us. He will never give us more than we can handle.

I spoke with a woman at the cancer center the other day, while Will was receiving his treatment. She was on her 11th cycle of chemotherapy and was obviously worn down and exhausted. But after talking with her a while, she said that she was very appreciative to have the cancer center because it gave her hope. It started to make me think about the power of hope. Where would we be without God? How could Will and I get through this without His strength to hold us up?

Ecclesiastes 3: A Time for Everything

1 There is a time for everything,

and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born

and a time to die,

a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal,

a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,

a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,

a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,

6 a time to search and a time to give up,

a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend,

a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate,

a time for war and a time for peace.

Image borrowed from: http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/252/144274.jpg

For those of you that are struggling this holiday season, I urge you to remember that seasons change and life goes on. Your pain won't last forever and things will get better. Maybe some of you are mourning the loss of a loved one, or holding that hand of you sick husband, or lying in a hospital bed. Maybe some of you are drowning in debt, trying to find work, or worrying about keeping your children fed. Just remember that God is our provider. He is our strength, and He is our HOPE. Hold onto the thought that a new season is just around the corner.

This Christmas Eve I sang in the Christmas choir at church, and we sang the song "Jesus Paid it All". There is something about that song that always makes me cry. However, one verse in particular kept jumping out at me. "I hear the Savior say, 'thy strength indeed is small. Child of weakness watch and pray. Find in me thine all in all." I just kept hearing God remind me that though this season is tough, God is enough to sustain us. He will be our all in all.

After that song, we had our candle light section of the service, where we all light a candle and hold it up in the air. The silence in the room, mixed with the beauty of everyone worshiping God together just brought me to tears. He showed me that each person in that room was going through something different, yet we were all joined together in the same place to worship God. He is the one that we should turn to, no matter what and He is the only one we can depend on to get us through anything. God speaks to us in many ways. We just have to sit and listen. Sometimes we need to be silent to hear his voice.

Image borrowed from: http://quiettimesamz.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/46-v10-candle1.jpg

Let's take this Christmas season to thank God for all He has done this year and pray that He can use us in even greater ways next year. Remember to tell your friends and family how much you love them and that God is enough to sustain you through each and every season.

Yahweh's Original Utility

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? I know this is a question asked in every “self-image” article, but it’s an important one…so work with me. When you see your reflection, what emotions come to surface? Are you satisfied, neutral, sad, or depressed? Do you think you are a plain Jane? Do you automatically begin pointing out your flaws or do you notice your beautiful smile?

These last few months I have been focusing on my goal to lose weight. They have not been the easiest few months but I’ve learned a lot. One of the books I began reading to help me along my journey is “Power Thoughts” by Joyce Meyer. In her book, Joyce explains that our thoughts can control us if we don’t learn to control them. If we think negatively about ourselves, we are bound to be negative people, and therefore struggle to reach our goals. If we think positively, we are bound to be positive people and therefore find it much easier to reach our goals. You would think this simple concept would cure the problems of the world. However, very few people take hold of it and run with it.

Image borrowed from: http://pursuingproverbs31.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/woman-praying-silhoutte.jpg

Tonight I was watching an episode of “What Not to Wear”. It is one of my favorite shows. Stacy and Clinton know what they’re doing. Pretty much every episode inspires me in some way. However, the episode that aired tonight really hit home. The woman getting the make-over was a recent divorcee, had gained some weight, and due to a health problem considered herself to be a “freak”. She said that no man would ever be interested in her and she felt no need to take care of herself because no one cared. Even as I am writing this, tears are coming to my eyes.

It is so easy to fall into the trap that Satan lays for us.He can plant one thought into our mind and affect our whole life. He can even use those that are closest to us to say hurtful things that stay with us for years. And for those that are unaware they have power over their thoughts, these lies can turn into a lifestyle and damage what God has created. “What has He created”, you ask? He has created Y.O.U.

Y – Yahweh’s

O – Original

U- Utility

Just like the power utility in your home, you must pay thebills to keep the lights on. To keep your inner light shining, you must “paythe bills” so to speak. I don’t mean opening up your wallet and handing out cash. I mean taking time aside for God and reading His Word, meditating on the truth, and taking care of your body (which is his Holy Temple).

Image borrowed from: http://dezignus.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/flying-girl.jpg

In tonight’s episode of “What Not to Wear”, Stacy asked the troubled young woman to keep repeating these simple words. I wish every girl and woman in the world would repeat them with her (and me).

"I am beautiful and I am going to share my beauty with the world."

Stacy “What Not to Wear”

And here’s the best part…God agrees.

Philippians 2:14-16

14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”[c] Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life.

We are not meant to hide in our clothes and walk around like dull fuddy dutties that hate life. We are meant to stand out and shine like stars in the sky. Rise up, women and start shining! Let’s look in the mirror and see radiance! Let’s take hold of the truth that we are Yahweh’s Original Utility.

Keep the lights on! Pay the bills! Know that you are beautiful on the inside and out!

Is Fear Controlling You?

Is Fear Controlling You?

Isaiah 41:13

For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you,Do not fear; I will help you.

Rosanne Cash said, “The key to change…is to let go of fear.”These are simple words with a profound meaning. I don’t know about you, but I find this statement completely true in my own life. Sad to say, the fear of failure can control whether we do or do not do something. It can control how we feel about ourselves, the motivation we possess to make steps toward progress, and how we live our day to day lives. In some cases, this can mean the decision to work out and eat healthy, or to grab the junk food in front of you. If you won’t succeed in losing weight, why even try, right? It can mean the decision to pass along a great job opportunity. If you can’t be perfect at it, why even try, right? Wrong.

Borrowed from http://www.psychologytoday.com/files/u45/failure_text.jpg

Fear has the power to control us. When we fear something, it becomes our God.

Isaiah 41:10

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, forI am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with myrighteous right hand.

Often, I run across women that walk with cement filled boots due to their fear of failure. They cover this up with words like, “Oh, that’snot my kind of thing. Why don’t you have her do it. She would be much better”or “Why would I even try that? I know I wouldn’t do it right.” To be honest, I am sometimes that woman. The very fact that I am writing this article and this magazine is still up and running shows me that it is possible to fight your fears when you have God on your side.

Isaiah 35:4

say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear;your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.”

I can’t tell you how many times I thought of quitting this Magazine, shutting it down, and moving on. I told myself, “I am not qualified. No one wants to read my articles. What do I know? I am too young, too inexperienced, etc.” I thought of a thousand reasons why I shouldn’t be the one writing these articles. However, there was one important reason why I should. God said so. Right now, this is what God wants me to do, so I am here…but that took a decision. It made me take one step closer to God and one step further from fear.

Psalm 91:5

You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,

There is a song from JJ Heller called, “Keep You Safe.” It’sone of my favorites and has helped me through countless sleepless nights. Someof the lyrics include: “You’ll have your own battles to fight when you are older. You’ll find yourself frozen inside but always remember if you feel alone, facing the giants and you don’t know what to do….My love is a light driving away all of your fear. So, don’t be afraid. Remember I made a promise to keep you safe.”

Now, of course this is not suggesting that you will have a care-free life. However, it is stating that God’s love can drive out fear.

Borrowed from http://www.landofmysojourn.net/sitebuilder/images/believe2-373x259.jpg

1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

My God is a God of love and joy; not of fear. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Our God is a God that helps us move mountains, heals the broken, binds up wounds, and strengthens the weak. He is a God of courageous strength, and He has created us in His image. We were not created to fear the world, but to save it through Jesus Christ. Ladies, let’s all stand up and make decisions that are led by Christ and not by fear. Let’s examine our thoughts and motives before we take action and fight the enemy with a strong stance of courageous strength.

Powerful and Effective

and

How praying for your family and friends can change lives.

Image borrowed from: http://www.truewoman.com/assets/images/women%20praying.jpg

James 5:16

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” This statement couldn't be truer. Without prayer, we have no link to God. Without prayer, we are unable to repent of our sins, we are unable to thank God, and we are unable to intercede on behalf of those we love. However, how many of us take for granted the fact that we have immediate and direct access to the Savior? I know I have. It is easy to forget the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross. It is easy to forget that we are extremely privileged to be able to speak to God whenever we like. It is easy to ignore the fact that for some people, we may be the only link to God in their lives.

Recently, I have been struggling with a few things. But, instead of taking it to God first, I tried to fix everything on my own. How many of you know that this doesn't work? I put myself in the way of God's will, I didn't ask for his help or advice, I tried to do it all on my own. And...I failed miserably. God often reminds us how big He is and how small we are in comparison.

When I finally decided to take my problem to God, miraculous things happened. He brought me a friend that prays. It may seem small to some people, but I believe what the verse above says, "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." My friend was able to stand in the gap for me when I was at my weakest. She was able to lift me up in prayer and make a petition to God on my behalf.

How many of you know someone that needs your prayer? How many of you are willing to stand in the gap for your friends/family?

Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Image borrowed from: http://djwlifecoach.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/women-praying.jpg

“Prayer is not an old woman's idle amusement. Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action.”

Mahatma Gandhi

When we pray, we should be seeing ourselves as soldiers. We should be assuming the position of battle. For prayer is, indeed a battle. Think of your unsaved family and friends. You may be the only one out there praying for them. But, "THE PRAYER OF A RIGHTEOUS MAN (WOMAN) IS POWERFUL AND EFFECTIVE". You must believe with faith that God is in control, that He hears your prayers, and that He will answer them in His timing.

James 5:15

And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Image borrowed from: http://myloupe.com/disp_thumb_images/1496/display/627541.jpg

Never ever underestimate the power of prayer. Don't assume that your problem is too small or too big for God. He can change lives. He can heal the sick. He can open doors that we've never imagined. But first, as Joyce Meyers says in her podcast about hindrances to prayer, "The number one hindrance to prayer is actually praying." Don't just think about it or talk about it. Get on your knees and begin to pray. If you're not used to praying and the concept seems foreign to you, take it one sentence at a time. God isn't up there waiting for you to make a mistake. He longs to talk to you. He longs to be close to you. Talk to him like you would talk to a friend. That is, after all what He is. He is the best friend you could ever have.

So, let's all take some time to sit down and talk to our Creator. Let's pray for our friends and family and allow God to do a wonderful work in their lives.

Can't Buy Me Love: Priceless In The Eyes of God

Image Borrowed from: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.tvrage.com

Hosea 14:4

“I will heal their waywardness and love them freely, for my anger has turned away from them"

Matthew 10:8

Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

Romans 3:24

and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

I am sure you've heard of the cliché "Can't Buy Me Love?" It's one of my very favorite sayings. The reason I love it so much is because it is so profoundly true. Four simple words have summed up how God feels about His creation. As the scriptures above indicate, God does not require anything from us in order for Him to love us. He offers his undying, never-ending, unconditional love for free. But, how many of us live the life of a truly loved and accepted woman? How many of us have accepted the love that God so richly gave us?

So many times women feel they need to earn love; from their family, friends, children, husbands, and yes even God. They live their lives as "super moms", "trophy wives", and "ladder climbers" all with the hopes that someone would love them, accept them, and maybe look up to them.

This type of behavior is very common. One of the deepest longings that women possess is the need to be loved and accepted. For some women that don't have God, they have never experienced unconditional love. They are always trying to be thinner, prettier, smarter (in some cases dumber), funnier, etc. just to win the approval of someone (sometimes just anyone).

I wish I could get a loud speaker that traveled across the globe so I could shout one thing: "You cannot buy love! Christ has already paid the price on the cross!" There is nothing we can say, do or think that can ever separate us from the love of Christ.

Ephesians 2:8-10

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Image borrowed from: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.stevescottsite.com

You might have guessed why I have chosen to write this article now...in the month of February. Of course, Valentine's Day is coming up very quickly and obviously it can make a person think about love. I have been married almost two years now (on Feb. 20th), and anyone that is married will understand that no human is capable of unconditional love. We can strive for it, but we all have flaws. We are all judgmental to a certain degree whether we like to admit it or not. We all do our best to make compromises and strive to keep our marriages fresh. I love my husband so very much, but one thing I have learned is that he will never love me the way that God loves me...and I should never expect him to.He loves me the best that he can love me.

Whether you are single, married, divorced, widowed, or dating there is one thing I need to say: NO MAN will ever love you the way God does. NO MAN will ever fill the hole in your heart that is meant for God. We were designed to desire a deep never-ending love from our Savior. I am not saying that there isn't a place for your husband (or future husband), but I am saying that God must remain our first love.

It can be so easy to get distracted and to forget about our first love, especially when "Mr. Right" is sitting next to us. It can also be easy to get distracted while looking for "Mr. Right". I remember dreading Valentine's Day when I was single. I felt like everyone had someone but me. The truth is, I was too caught up in waiting for "Mr. Right" and I wasn't spending enough time thanking God for the wonderful gift of singleness. Yes, ladies; it is a gift.

Image borrowed from: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Tn1gkl4OJqU/SwYZMTfF9PI/AAAAAAAAAw8/IVKyvjkfPqQ/s1600/love11.jpg

We all go through different seasons in life. However, one thing that doesn't change, doesn't get blown away by the wind or disappear like leaves in autumn is the love of Christ. It can sound redundant, but it is important. It is the most important lesson you can learn in life.

So, for all you over-achieving work-aholic Christians out there, I am sorry to bust your bubble: You cannot earn it this time. It's already yours.

Accept his love and don't feel guilty for it. Let's all try to live lives that reflect the love of Christ that He has so graciously given us.

You're not alone: Facing the Holiday Season without family

You're Not Alone:

Facing the Holiday Season without Family

The Christmas season is a wonderful time. It's a time to remember the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It's a time to spend with family and friends and thank God for what He's given us. It's a time of giving. But, what happens when you end up alone during the Christmas season? Perhaps you are out of town on business, sent away for the military, or maybe you have had a death in the family. Often times, people find it difficult to spend Christmas alone. But, what if I told you that you can never actually be alone? What if I told you that God sends his Holy Spirit to live in us and with us every day?

2 Corinthians 13:14

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

We have been given the priviledge of an ever-present God being in our lives; not just on Christmas, but every day. We have been given the gift of FELLOWSHIP with the HOLY SPIRIT. Can you fathom how great this gift is? God is letting us see and feel and experience a part of him. How amazing is this? How much must He love us to allow us such a thing?

Job 16:20

My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;

Many people don't understand that God is more than the "big head in the sky". He is our friend, our intercessor, our counselor, our love, our salvation. If you haven't already, I challenge you to allow Jesus into your heart and ask him to be your friend. As cheesy as that sounds, it is possible. You will never know a greater friend than Jesus. You will never have a more faithful friend than Him.

Proverbs 18:24

but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Job 29:4

...when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house,

He is there during your Grieving

If you are someone that's lost a family member, Christmas can be extra hard. It can bring up memories of him/her and remind you of the good times you spent together. I am a realist and I know that sometimes you just don't have it in you to smile or to think about the good. But, that's what I am here for...and that's what God is here for. He wants you to know that He will be standing by your side holding your hand through the hard times. There are many seasons in life and some of them are very difficult. But, God said He would never give us anything we could not handle. Just ask for his help, ask Him to wrap His loving arms around you and bring you comfort and peace. I promise that if you ask Him, He will not let you down. You just have to be open to receive his love and comfort.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Ten Things to Do if You're "Alone" on Christmas

I just read an article called "10 Things to do if you're alone for the Holidays" by Laurie Stoneham. Please copy and paste this link into your browser to read her full article: http://psychcentral.com/lib/2006/10-things-to-do-if-youre-alone-for-the-holidays/. In her article, Stoneham offers practical advise that will help you get through the day. I will add to it, however, to spend time with God. Start the day with a prayer and thank God for being in your life. Thank him for all He has given you.

Here are Stoneham's "10 Things to do"

De-mythologize and adjust expectations. Elaine Rodino, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in Santa Monica, Calif., says there are so many categories of expectations about the season being just right that it brings up all sorts of issues relating to family, stress and anxiety, eating disorders, sobriety, self-esteem, competency — the list goes on. “There’s this idea that it’s supposed to be perfect, and if it’s not, the person asks, ‘What’s wrong with me?’” She adds that statistically, the number of “traditional households” in this country is not in the majority.

Pick up the phone. Call friends and ask to be included in whatever they’re doing. Rodino suggests offering to bring a dish or seeing how you can contribute to the gathering. She says most people love opening their homes and expanding the celebration. It works for everyone.

Be proactive. Create an “alternative family” made up of people whose company you enjoy. Plan and prepare a potluck feast if you like. Remember that you are not alone in being alone during the holidays. Get together with others and have some fun.

Plan an outing. Go on a hike, or go to the movies, a park or a museum. Enjoy the outing with your group or by yourself.

Pamper yourself. Treat yourself to a day of beauty at a spa, get a massage or find some other special way to luxuriate. Do whatever you enjoy doing.

Reach out. “Build bridges the rest of the year, and cross them during the holidays,” said Craig Ellison, Ph.D., author of Saying Goodbye to Loneliness and Finding Intimacy. If you can’t be with family or loved ones during this time of the year, send them letters or e-mails or call them — in other words, reach out to them.

Remember your bonds and blessings. Pull out photo albums and read old letters. While this may be bittersweet, Ellison says it’s “not toxic.” If possible, get on the phone and talk with loved ones who are still living.

Help others. Volunteering at a mission or shelter for the homeless will help you feel connected. Ellison suggests that you participate in activities with this organization at other times of the year, not just on one day of the year. This will make the experience more fulfilling. Rodino says volunteering at a soup kitchen gives you a healthy perspective. “There’s nothing like that for slapping you back to realizing how well you are,” Rodino noted.

Travel. If you have the finances, get away for a few days. Go skiing or take a tropical holiday. Singles groups often have tour groups during the holidays. Rodino says this gets you out of the traditional holiday mindset.

Get through the day. If you’re unable to do any of these things, Rodino tells her patients to just get through it. Read. Sleep. Rent a video. And remember, tomorrow it’ll all be over.

I hope that everyone out there has a very Merry Christmas. I know that for some of you it may be easier said than done. However, remember that Jesus is your friend and if you allow Him he will be ever-present in your life. Have a very Merry Christmas everyone and let's all celebrate the birth of our Savior and friend, Jesus Christ!

Proverbs 31: The Thrifty Lady

Proverbs 31: The Thrifty Lady

Image borrowed from: http://directoryofjoliet.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/coupon-lady-300x283.jpg

In light of this holiday season, I felt it necessary to offer some helpful pointers for those holiday shoppers out there. Now, I know that not everyone out there likes to sew or make crafts. However, I was inspired by my own endevors of Christmas shopping during a recession such as this. After walking down the aisles of my local stores, I began to calculate how much money I would need to get meaningful gifts for everyone. The numbers in my mind were ringing and ringing; when all of a sudden, I ran across the fabric store! I saw a sign in the window: 50% off of Christmas fabrics!.....I have decided to make home-made Christmas pillows for all of my family members this year.

Now some of you may be asking me...."What does this have to do with God or His Word?" Well, I am glad you asked. :) There is a chapter in Proverbs that talks about a wife of noble character. In this chapter, every characteristic of a noble woman is described. One of them is being "thrifty".

Proverbs 31:

16 She considers a field and buys it;

out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.

17 She sets about her work vigorously;

her arms are strong for her tasks.

18 She sees that her trading is profitable,

and her lamp does not go out at night.

19 In her hand she holds the distaff

and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

20 She opens her arms to the poor

and extends her hands to the needy.

21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;

for all of them are clothed in scarlet.

22 She makes coverings for her bed;

she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

24 She makes linen garments and sells them,

and supplies the merchants with sashes.

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;

she can laugh at the days to come.

This woman knew how to control her pocket book. She worked day and night, planting vineyards, sewing, taking care of her children and husband, etc. The thing that stuck out to me was that she saw her trading as profitable.

Image borrowed from: http://www.skyscanner.net/news/shopping.lady.JPG

I know I am not the only one out there trying to figure out Christmas gifts right now, so I thought some of you might appreciate an article I recently found called "How to Give Christmas Gifts in a Recession Economy" By Kristina Jensen. In her article, Jensen has a lot of great ideas, such as: bake/cook your friend's favorite food, send e-cards, and wrap with tissue paper instead of expensive gift wrap.

To read her article, please visit: http://www.ehow.com/how_4536946_give-christmas-gifts-recession-economy.html.

What kind of shopper are you? Do you splurge on things you don't need or do you carefully think about your purchase before you make it? Do you consider all of your options or go with the most expensive gift first?

The woman in Proverbs 31 made a lot of things by hand: clothing, coverings for her bed, etc. Perhaps you might take up sewing or making other items on your own?

Obviously, not everyone is gifted in arts and crafts or sewing, but I challenge you to come up with new ways to be a good steward with what God has given you. And when you do so, sometimes you come up with more thoughtful gifts than you would have originally.

One of the most important things, ESPECIALLY during the Christmas season, is to remember to give. Don't just give to people that you know. Get involved in charities that are going on all around you.

Image borrowed from: http://www.scc-ucc.com/images/Mission/Angel%20tree.jpg

Here is a list of popular charities during the Christmas season (Please copy and paste the links into your web browser):

Angel Tree: http://www.angeltree.org/deliverlove

World Vision: http://www.worldvision.org/#/home/main/help-change-a-childs-life-today-1-1119

Safe Nest: http://www.safenest.org/info/volunteer/

Safe House: http://www.safehousenv.org/

or you can help our local missionary by purchasing her wonderful photography!

Stephanie Anderson (Missionary serving in Australia): http://www.lifefromoneeye.com/ OR http://stephanieanderson.carbonmade.com/

One of the greatest commandments is to love others (the other to love God). I challenge you to think of others above yourself this Christmas.

Now for those of you that think, "I have enough to think about with just my family. Can't people just take care of their own children?" (Yes, I have heard this before), think about these statistics:

Estimated homeless figures in the United States range from 600,000 to 2.5 million

Source: http://www.fas.org, 2009

1.37 million of the total homeless population in USA are children under the age of 18. 40% are families with children, 41% are single males, 14% are single females

Source: International Journal of Psychosocial Research, 2008

The National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers & Clients state that the average age of a homeless person is 9 years old.

So before you spend all your money getting your children those extra toys that they may not need, try to spare a little money on the side (or a little spare time to make a gift) for those children that are born into poverty.

This Christmas, become a charitable giver and show the world that we have Christ living through us. He is living and breathing in us and our lives should emulate his wonderful, generous, loving spirit.

Let's all give from our hearts this Christmas and change someone's life for Christ!

Because Someone Gave

Image borrowed from https://anitagrant.com/images/stories/Blog/GivingBackjpgTxt.jpg

As some of you know, I am a huge fan of "Youth With a Mission", an international volunteer movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Through YWAM, I was able to travel around Cape York in Australia ministering to the Indigenous of the country.

Since leaving Australia in 2007, I still keep in touch with some of the people I met there and we've become good friends. Recently, the base I attended (Reef to Outback) bought a ship and turned it into a "Medical Ship" bringing free health care to Papa New Guinea. They made a video summarizing their ministry this year. I applaud them for their work and praise God that He has been using them in such a powerful way. Please take a moment to watch it.

The reason I've entitled this article "Because Someone Gave" is because this video inspired me. Well, I guess it's God that inspired me. :) He is the ultimate inspiration.

In today's culture, we really don't talk about GIVING very much. We talk about "charities" in tax terms; we give money to a homeless person and feel our job is done for the whole month. But, are we really willing to give EVERYTHING for the sake of God's kingdom? If Jesus appeared before you today and asked you to leave all your possessions, your family, your home, your country....would you?

There is a reason that this scripture exists:

Matthew 19:24

"Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

God didn't say this to judge those that have more money than others. He said this because He knew that human nature is to value physical possessions, family, time, freedom, etc. And the moment that you love something more than God, it becomes an idol.

"Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth."

I don't know about you, but I want to be ready when Jesus asks me to do something. I don't want to walk away sad because he asked me to move to China and sell all my possessions. Believe it or not, there are missionaries all around the world right now that have answered God's call to do that very thing. They gave up their freedom in some cases; they gave up time with their family, left their homes, left their lives....just to GIVE to someone else.

Image borrowed from http://maryjaneryan.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/givingredclothheart.jpeg

This is something that I want you to really think about. Really consider what you are willing to give for the sake of Christ.

I will tell you that my time in Australia was life changing....my other mission trips to Mexico and Slovakia were life changing as well. The reason? I gave.

There is nothing that feels better than to give unselfishly to someone else knowing you will not receive something back in return. And I am not just talking about money...nor am I just talking about global missions.

What are you doing right now where you are?

Are you a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a smile for a stranger, a warm meal for the sick, a carpool for a co-worker? Think about the people around you. Do you know someone that is in need? How about someone that is hurting?

Luke 21 The Widow's Offering 1 "As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.[a] 3"I tell you the truth," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

Life is too short to think about ourselves. Life is too short to be looking more closely at our bank accounts than the condition of our hearts.

Are you ready? Will you be someone that gave? Will you change someone else's life because you were available for God?

What gets in the way?

One thing to note is that Satan doesn't want us to help each other. He doesn't want us to be kind, loving, generous, or anything that resembles Jesus. So, he will try his best to distract you and whisper lies that prevent you from following in Jesus' footsteps.

He will tell you that you can't afford to help a widow buy food for her children. He will say that you don't have the time to help someone fix their car. He will say you can't get involved in someone's problems so you aren't there when they need a friend.

Chances are, you have already faced some of these lies. Satan is the master of lies.

But praise God that He gave us the power to demolish ALL strongholds. He gave us the power to stomp Satan under our feet and tell him he has no power in our lives.

God gave us the ability to give. So, I challenge you to kick satan in the face and give to those around you. I promise you won't regret it.

"Over and Out" : Are you listening?

Over and Out!

Are you listening?

I recently read an article entitled "Listen and be heard with 'walkie-talkie management" by Anne Milkovich. In the article, Milkovich is speaking about communication skills for managers. One of her main points is that we should train ourselves to communicate as if we are on a walkie talkie. You speak clearly...then you wait for a response.

This is a wonderful idea for dealing with employees, co-workers, and even family members. However, do you think you effectively listen for a response during prayer?

Milkovich said, "When we think of communication skills, we tend to think in terms of how well we talk. But in fact, listening is really what determines good walkie-talkie skills. People are more interested in being heard than in hearing. Fight this tendency in yourself as you capitalize on it in others."

Image borrowed from http://www.basic-counseling-skills.com/images/foto-active-listening.jpg

Image borrowed from http://images.ritchiellanto.multiply.com/image/YtFHcWOeegiN6lAGq9tNqw/photos/1M/300x300/37/God-is-still-speaking.jpg?et=euHuhnZUHY6n7Pl6tb0YKg&nmid=0

Often times when I am speaking to someone and mention that God revealed something to me, I get a strange look. The strangest look of them all comes when I say that God spoke to me. "He actually SPOKE to you?" some people might say. My answer, "Yes. He spoke to me".

The reason a lot of people claim they've never heard God is they don't know how to recognize His voice.

God speaks in many different ways (some of the following content was borrowed from http://www.allaboutprayer.org/hearing-gods-voice.htm):

1) The Bible: In his book Knowing God, J. I. Packer says, "God has spoken to man, and the Bible is His Word, given to us to make us wise unto salvation."

2) Our thoughts: Ever have a thought just pop into your mind and you couldn't figure out how it got there? Often times this is God urging you to do something.

3) Our conversations with others: Ever have a friend lend a shoulder to cry on during a hard time? Ever meet a stranger that had just the right words to say? Sometimes God designs "Holy Moments" and uses others to speak to us.

There are many more ways God speaks. To find a complete list of ways God can speak to us, I recommend buying the book "101 Ways God Speaks (And How to Hear Him) by Sandy Warner at http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/101-ways-god-speaks-%28and-how-to-hear-him%29/2012106.

God is constantly speaking to us, His children. It is our responsibility to listen and obey.

Image borrowed from http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:keAH7ecnJVZVfM:http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m155/misslangen/Distractions_Type.jpg&t=1

In order to effectively listen, we must get rid of all "static" in the conversation. This can include the TV show you have on in the background, your pre-conceived thoughts on God, your emotions, your sins, your thoughts, etc. etc. etc.

Here is my suggestion: If you are yearning to hear the voice of God, make yourself available. Get rid of these distractions; go to your quiet place or "prayer closet" as some would call it.

There is a song about entering the presence of God. It describes it as physically walking through the sanctuary into the most holy place. I like to think of it that way when I pray. I try to remember that I am in the presence of the Most High...it is a lot easier to remain quiet and listen when you understand that the one you are speaking to created the Universe. He might just have more knowledge than me. :)

The song is called "Take Me In" - by Kutless. I challenge you to look this song up and listen with your eyes shut. Try to imagine walking into the presence of God. There is nothing more powerful than that.

Take me past the outer courts

Into the holy place

Past the brazen altar

Lord I want to see your face

Pass me by the crowds of people

The priests who sing your praise

I hunt and thirst for your righteousness

But it's only found in one place

Take me in to the holy of holies

Take me in by the blood of the lamb

Take me in to the holy of holies

Take the coal, touch my lips, here I am

Image borrowed from http://www.makeadiff21.com/storage/Obedience.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1254790866570

Psalm 119:60

"I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands."

There is one thing to point out here. When God tells you to do something, you should do it without delay. When you are in-tune with the Holy Spirit and recognize his tug on your heart, He can ask you to do anything at anytime without any warning. The closer you get to God, the easier it will be to obey without second guessing Him.

Believe me, it will be worth it to follow His direction. He has it all figured out already.

Conclusion

Tell me why it's easier to take advice from a television show or radio program that it is to take advice from God. Why is it that when we have the world on the other end of the walkie talkie, we turn the volume up and when God's on the other end, we turn it down? The answer: it is a whole lot easier to do what the world suggests because no one will oppose you. But when we follow God, the reward will be 10 times greater.

Let's all practice our listening skills and turn the volume up for God.

Marital Bliss not so BLISSFUL?

Image borrowed from http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/03/05/article-1159517-03BF6FD0000005DC-820_468x342.jpg

What to do when your marriage is on the rocks

Life is a funny thing sometimes. As my husband says, "Just when you think you got it, you don't." Well, the same thing can be said about life in the "marital realms". Just when you think your marriage is going great, a speed bump can show up on the road and catch you off guard. A death in the family, financial problems, job lay-offs, infidelity, problems with children? The list can go on and on when it comes to outward interference in a marriage. However, remember that God is the one that created marriage. Satan is the one that wants to destroy families and break up marriages. The odds are that if you are married, you have hit a rough patch at one time or another. Just as life has its ups and downs, so does a marriage. But what are we supposed to do when the downs of marriage have kicked us to the curb? Let's see what the Bible has to say.

The Fruits of the Spirit

Image borrowed from http://www.sonofchrist.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/fruit-of-the-spirit-sample.jpg

One thing I've found to be true in marriage is you cannot change your spouse. You cannot expect your marriage to change if you are depending on your spouse to change it. You must be proactive and focus on your behavior first. When you begin to pray for your marriage and live and act in the fruits of the spirit, I guarantee that your spouse will take notice.

When you are in the midst of an argument, do you think it would get better or worse if you listened and admitted your faults? Or do you think you will improve the situation by snapping back and sharing all of your hurts? Most likely the first way is the best.

God gave us an outline to how we should live...not just with friends and co-workers, but with our spouses as well.

I have a few tips that may help out when you are on the verge of exploding:

1) Step back from the situation. SAY A PRAYER. It may be hard because you are so angry, but SAY A PRAYER.

2) Respond in love. There is nothing wrong with sharing your feelings, even if they are feelings of hurt or disappointment. But, share those feelings in LOVE.

3) Be gentle in your speech. Don't use a harsh tone or body language.

4) Do your best to keep peace in your household. If the situation is escalating, step away again. Take another breather. SAY ANOTHER PRAYER.

5) Be patient with your spouse as they explain their feelings. Don't interrupt, but listen patiently.

6) Be faithful to your spouse by knocking down temptations to run away or run into someone else's arms. Be faithful in mind and action...your marriage will survive this if you depend on God.

7) Be self-controlled. When you are angry, do not react. Violence is caused by anger...if you are having violent thoughts walk away. Control your anger.

8 ) Do your best to not steal your spouse's joy. You ever hear of raining on someone's parade? If you are upset about something, choose the correct timing in bringing it up to your spouse. Choose the correct environment as well.

9) Be kind in your actions and speech. There is a way to explain yourself kindly, even if what you have to say is productive criticism.

10) Goodness....Keep negativity out of your mouth. Criticism is a large cause of divorce. Remind your spouse of the good you see in him. Be careful of being too overly critical.

*I know this is easier said than done, but the more you practice living in the spirit, the easier it will become*

Forgiveness

Image borrowed from http://wearyouraffirmations.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/forgiveness.jpg

If you are married, or thinking of getting married in the future, read this next part carefully.

Marriage is work. Great marriages are created by two people that are dedicated to making it work. You will not get through life being married without some arguments. It is going to happen. So don't be surprised when a dispute happens. It just will.

However, when your husband hurts you, do you hold onto a grudge afterward? Are you able to forgive him and wipe his slate clean?

Luke 6:37

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven."

This is a hard one to hear, especially if wounds are great. Rape victims, victims of abuse, and the like will especially find this difficult. A large part of why it is so difficult is because most believe if they forgive the abuser, they will be getting away with the crime. However, we must come to know that God is the one to deal with the abuser. It is not our part to avenge, but the Lord's. I am not suggesting that you stay in an abusive situation. If you are being abused you should contact your local police department and seek help. However, you cannot hold onto the pain forever. You must learn to forgive and move on.

The same goes for wives that have been hurt by husbands. Let's face it; we all say things we shouldn't at times. We all hurt our spouse at one time or another intentionally or unintentionally. But, if we hold onto grudges and keep bringing them back into arguments, we will never move on and our marriages will never improve.

Forgiveness is an art form. Let's become masters of it.

Don't give Satan a Foothold

Image borrowed from http://www.etraper.pl/sklep/images/regatta%20foothold%2001.jpg

Ephesians 4:26-32

"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. ... Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

When we live in sin, we give Satan a foothold. This actually means you are helping Satan ruin your life. His goal is to STEAL, KILL, and DESTROY anything and everything in your life. He doesn't take vacations when you are at your lowest point. He will pounce on you like a lion. If your marriage is suffering and you hold onto grudges, he will feed off of that to make it worse. DO NOT give him a foothold because he will use it.

Conclusion

Image borrowed from http://www.truemanhood.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/husband-and-wife.jpg

1 Peter 3:1

"Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,"

1 Peter 3:1-3

"Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."

Let's all try to live the way God intended: with the fruits of the Spirit.
